ChatGPT Isn't Reading Your Website. It's Reading Your Google Profile.
We asked ChatGPT to recommend Mumbai businesses across 5 categories. It cited zero business websites — and pulled almost everything from Google Business Profiles and Reddit.
Ask ChatGPT for the best dental clinic in Mumbai and you’d expect it to go read some dental websites.
It doesn’t. It opens a map.
We put five buyer questions about Mumbai businesses to ChatGPT on 26 July 2026. Across all five, it did not cite a single business’s own website. Not one. What it cited instead was your Google Business Profile — your rating, your review count, your opening hours — and, in every single answer, Reddit.
If you run a Mumbai business and you’ve been investing in your website to win AI search, this is the uncomfortable part: for this engine, in this city, that’s not where the decision is being made.
How we tested
Five categories, one buyer question each, on 26 July 2026: dental implants, CA firms, interior designers, apartment builders, and NEET coaching.
We used ChatGPT in Temporary Chat — no memory, no personalisation, no account history influencing results — and prefixed each question with “Search the web.” to force live retrieval rather than training data. We then logged every source cited and every business named.
Two honest limits. Five categories is a probe, not a census. And ChatGPT’s retrieval changes; run this next month and the specifics will differ even if the shape holds. We’re publishing the method so you can check it yourself.
(Our free Perplexity quota ran out partway through this project, which is why this study is ChatGPT-only. That turned out to be useful — the engines behave so differently that mixing them would have hidden the pattern.)
What ChatGPT actually returned
In four of the five categories, the answer opened with an interactive Google Maps widget listing businesses with their star ratings, category and open/closed status — before any prose.
| Category | Map widget? | Business websites cited | What it cited instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dental implants | Yes | 0 | |
| CA firms | Yes | 0 | Reddit, RegisterKaro |
| Interior designers | Yes | 0 | Livspace blog, ThreeBestRated, Reddit |
| NEET coaching | Yes | 0 | Collegedunia, Careers360, ThreeBestRated, Reddit |
| Apartment builders | No | 0 | MagicBricks, NoBroker, Economic Times, Reddit |
Zero own-site citations across all five. That is the finding.
Your rating is doing the work
Look at what got recommended and the mechanism is obvious.
For dental implants, ChatGPT named Ceramco Dental, Dr. Vora Dental Care, Loop Dental, Illuminate, ZenSmile and others — with ratings of 4.8 to 5.0. It justified the top pick in plain language: “4.9/5 from 1,600+ reviews.” Not “their website explains their implant protocol.” The review count was the reason.
The CA firms were the same: N D Savla, R J Gala, H.L. Shah, CP Pandey, Bhavik Kubadia — every one rated 4.8 or 4.9.
The interior designers: The Design Code 4.8, The Design Interior 4.9, Purpledesk 4.8, Bhumi Saglani 4.9.
If your Google rating is 4.3 and your competitor’s is 4.8, your competitor is in the answer and you aren’t — regardless of which of you has the better website. For a Mumbai service business, your review profile is now your AI visibility strategy, and everything else is secondary.
The one exception proves the rule. NEET coaching surfaced Aakash (4.0), ALLEN (4.2) and PACE (3.9) — noticeably lower ratings than any other category. Brand recognition can override rating, but you have to be Aakash-sized for that to work.
Reddit was in every single answer
Five categories out of five cited Reddit.
For dental implants it was flagged explicitly as “community feedback” — a Reddit thread arguing that experienced independent implantologists beat large chains. For CA firms, Reddit shaped the core recommendation to prefer mid-sized firms over the Big 4. For builders, ChatGPT reported that Reddit sentiment on Lodha and Runwal was “more mixed” — an unprompted negative signal about named companies, sourced from a forum.
Most Mumbai businesses have no idea what’s said about them on Reddit, and no strategy for it. It is now a direct input into what an AI tells your customer. You can’t manufacture Reddit sentiment — attempting to is both against Reddit’s rules and easy to spot — but you can at least know what’s there.
Builders broke the pattern entirely
Apartment builders was the only category with no map widget. Instead ChatGPT went to MagicBricks, NoBroker and the Economic Times, and named Oberoi Realty, Godrej, Hiranandani, K Raheja, Piramal, Rustomjee and others.
Still zero builder websites. Mumbai’s property portals are so dominant that they’ve become the reference layer for the entire category — the AI treats MagicBricks as the authority on who builds well, not the builders.
For context: when we ran the same “best builders for apartments” question about Kochi on Perplexity, every single citation was a builder’s own website. Same category, different city, different engine, exactly opposite result. Nobody should be generalising about “how AI search works” from one test — including us.
Something we noticed, and won’t recommend
Reading the business names ChatGPT surfaced, a pattern jumped out:
“H.L.Shah & Associates |Tax, GST, TDS, IT Audit, PT PF ESIC LLP Company Formation, HUF NRI TDS Startup Notice Consultant”
“Innovations The Interior Studio | Best luxury Residential | Turnkey & Commercial Interior Designer in Andheri & Mumbai”
“Bhavik Kubadia and Associates : Chartered Accountant | NRI Income Tax Return Filing | GST & Audit Service in Ghatkopar”
Those are keyword-stuffed Google Business Profile names. Four of five CA firms and two of seven interior designers had them — and ChatGPT reproduced them verbatim, keywords and all.
So: is it working? Right now, apparently yes.
Should you copy it? No, and we won’t do it for clients. Stuffing keywords into your GBP business name violates Google’s representation guidelines — your profile name must be your real-world business name. The penalty is suspension of the listing, which for a local business is the single worst thing that can happen to it. You’d be trading your entire local presence for a temporary edge in one AI engine that could close the loophole in a product update.
We’re reporting it because it’s in the data and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. We’re telling you not to do it because the risk is genuinely asymmetric.
What to do instead
Treat your Google Business Profile as your primary AI-visibility asset. Complete every field, correct primary category, accurate service area, current hours, fresh photos. For Mumbai service businesses this now matters more for AI recommendations than your homepage does.
Work on review count and recency, ethically. The threshold that showed up repeatedly in our data was 4.8+. Getting there is a systems problem, not a marketing one: ask every satisfied customer, make it easy, respond to all of them. Never buy reviews — that breaches Google’s policies and gets listings removed.
Find out what Reddit says about you. Search your business name and your category on r/mumbai. If there’s nothing, that’s a gap. If there’s something negative, you at least want to know before your customers’ AI assistant tells them.
Get listed where your category’s aggregators are. Builders need MagicBricks and NoBroker. Coaching institutes need Collegedunia and Careers360. Those are the sources the AI reads for your industry.
Then build your website anyway. Zero own-site citations in ChatGPT does not mean websites don’t matter — in our Kochi study on Perplexity, own sites were 39% of all citations, and for builders there they were 100%. Different engines, genuinely different behaviour. Optimising for only one is how you get blindsided when your customers switch.
We got this wrong before we tested it
We’re a Mumbai SEO agency, so this is our home market and we had assumptions going in. Most of them were wrong — we expected to find directories dominating, and instead found Google Business Profile data driving nearly everything with Reddit as the editorial layer on top.
We’d rather publish what the data actually showed than what we expected. We’ll rerun this periodically, because the one safe prediction is that it’ll change.
Curious what AI says about your business? Try our AI visibility checker, or book a free audit and we’ll map your category properly.
We also ran a version of this in Kerala using a different engine — what AI recommends in Kochi — and the results barely resemble these.
