Why Your Mumbai Business Isn't Showing on ChatGPT (And How to Fix It)
Missing from ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews? What our Mumbai, Kochi and Delhi tests found, and a 20-minute diagnostic you can run yourself.
Ask ChatGPT “best [your service] in Mumbai” and see what happens. If your business isn’t mentioned, you’re not alone — and you’re losing customers you can’t even see, because none of this shows up in your analytics. There is no referral, no impression, no query. The customer simply never learns you exist.
This is the page we send people to when they ask us that question. It covers what is actually happening inside each engine, what our own tests in Mumbai, Kochi and Delhi found, a diagnostic you can run yourself this afternoon, and an honest account of what changes and how quickly.
“Why isn’t my brand showing up when people ask ChatGPT about competitors in my industry?”
Almost always because the engine is not reading your website at all. It is reading somebody else’s page about your category — a directory, a listicle, a Google Business Profile, a Reddit thread — and naming whichever businesses appear there. Your site can be excellent and still be irrelevant to that decision.
This is the single most common misdiagnosis we see. Business owners assume AI invisibility is a website problem and start rewriting their homepage. In most categories, the website is not where the answer comes from.
Do the three engines work the same way?
No, and treating them as one thing is the second most common error. They retrieve differently, cite differently, and respond to completely different work.
| Google AI Overviews | ChatGPT | Perplexity | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it retrieves | RAG over Google’s index, with query fan-out | Mostly a high-authority corpus, plus live browsing | Live web retrieval on nearly every query |
| How often it names brands | Moderate | Rarely | Frequently |
| Weight on freshness | Medium | Low | Very high |
| Realistic time to appear | Weeks | Slow, corpus-dependent | Hours after Google or Bing indexes you |
| The lever you actually have | Passage structure and schema | Third-party corroboration | Publishing and update cadence |
Two consequences follow. First, being cited by one engine tells you very little about the others — published overlap between the domains ChatGPT and Perplexity cite is small, so any agency quoting you a single blended “AI visibility score” is quoting you a fiction. Ask for it per engine. Second, a large share of the pages ChatGPT cites most often are structurally unreachable for a business: Wikipedia, government and university domains, app stores, major news. For ChatGPT specifically, the winnable goal is usually not “get our page cited”. It is “be the business that gets named inside an answer sourced from somewhere else”. That is a different job, and it needs different work.
What happened when we tested this in Mumbai
We ran five buyer questions through ChatGPT on 26 July 2026 — dental implants, CA firms, interior designers, apartment builders and NEET coaching — in Temporary Chat, with no memory or account history, and logged every source. ChatGPT cited zero business websites across all five categories.
Four of the five answers opened with a Google Maps widget before any prose. What justified the recommendations was the review profile: dental clinics rated 4.8 to 5.0, CA firms at 4.8 and 4.9, with ChatGPT explaining one pick in plain language as “4.9/5 from 1,600+ reviews.” Not the website. The review count was the reason.
Reddit appeared in all five answers. For apartment builders it reported that Reddit sentiment on two named developers was “more mixed” — an unprompted negative signal about specific companies, sourced from a forum most of those companies have never looked at.
If you are a Mumbai service business, the practical reading is blunt: your Google Business Profile and your review profile are your AI visibility strategy, and your website is secondary. The full method and results are in our Mumbai ChatGPT study.
Is that true everywhere?
No. We ran twelve categories through Perplexity and Google AI Overviews in Kochi on the same date and got a materially different answer: 18 of 46 distinct cited sources were businesses’ own websites.
The split ran by category, not by city. Apartment builders returned 100% own-site citations. Dental clinics and Ayurveda resorts were nearly as strong. But hotels, restaurants, CBSE schools and IT companies cited not one business website — TripAdvisor supplied effectively the whole hotels answer, an admissions directory supplied six of eight school citations, and for IT companies a personal blog outranked hundreds of firms as a source about their own industry.
The pattern underneath: high-consideration purchases that need specific detail send the engine to your site; everything else sends it to whoever aggregates the category. Which of those you are in decides where your budget goes, and it takes about ten minutes to find out. The Kochi study has the per-category table.
For the same reason, the Mumbai builders result and the Kochi builders result were exact opposites. Nobody should be generalising about “how AI search works” from a single test, ourselves included.
What if there is no AI Overview for my keyword at all?
Then there is nothing to win on that keyword, and chasing it is wasted budget. In Delhi we ran paired queries across three categories — one phrased the way a business wants to rank, one phrased the way a customer actually starts. Every commercial query (“best interior designers in Delhi”) returned no AI Overview. Every advice-framed query (“how much does interior design cost in Delhi”) returned one.
Google is not showing nothing on the commercial searches. It is showing the local pack, which it considers a better answer and which carries the ads. The opportunity is the question your customer asks before they reach the money keyword. And this is market-specific: the same query shape did return an AI Overview in Kochi, because the market is thinner and Google is comfortable summarising it. See the Delhi AI Overview test.
“We’re a B2B company in India and we don’t appear anywhere”
B2B is the hardest case and the largest opportunity, because the whole shortlist now forms before anyone contacts you. A technical buyer asks an assistant for suppliers in a category, gets three or four names, and works from that list. You never see the enquiry you didn’t get.
Three things make B2B harder. Your category has few or no consumer directories, so there is often no aggregator for the engine to read. Your buyers are not leaving reviews, so the Mumbai review mechanism doesn’t apply. And your specifications, tolerances and certifications — exactly the detail that would make you extractable — usually live in a PDF or behind a form.
That last one is fixable this month. Put the specification detail on an indexable page as text, name your certifications and standards explicitly, and write each capability as a passage that makes sense on its own. We go through this in detail on our B2B and industrial SEO page.
Run this 20-minute diagnostic before you spend anything
Do this yourself. It costs nothing and it will tell you which of the problems above you actually have.
- Write down the five questions a customer asks before they choose you. Real sentences, not keywords. “Who does dental implants in Andheri”, not “dental implants Mumbai”.
- Run each one in ChatGPT with Temporary Chat on, prefixed with “Search the web.” Log every business named and every source cited.
- Run the same five in Perplexity, which shows its sources plainly.
- Google each one and note whether an AI Overview appears at all.
- Classify what you found. Were the citations businesses’ own websites, or directories, listicles, review platforms and forums?
- Check your Google Business Profile rating and review count against the businesses that were named. In our Mumbai test this alone explained most of the outcome.
If step 5 says “third parties”, your work is on those third parties. If it says “own websites”, your work is on your own pages. If step 4 says “no AI Overview”, stop optimising that keyword for AI and go after the advice-framed question instead.
Our free AI Visibility Checker gives you an indicative score in about 30 seconds if you want a starting point first. It estimates rather than queries every model live, so treat it as a prompt to run the six steps above, not a substitute for them. If you want the full measurement method we use with clients — the eight components, the three evidence layers and what the number cannot tell you — it is published at our AI Visibility Score methodology.
What actually moves, and how fast
Being absent and being described badly are different problems with different timelines. Honest expectations, based on how the engines retrieve:
- Weeks. Perplexity visibility, once new or updated content is indexed by Google or Bing. It weights freshness heavily and re-retrieves constantly. This is the fastest feedback loop you have.
- One to three months. Google AI Overview inclusion, where an Overview exists for the query at all. Passage structure and schema are the levers.
- Three to six months, or longer. ChatGPT. It leans on a slower corpus and on third-party corroboration you do not control directly. Google Business Profile completeness and genuine review growth are the fastest legitimate inputs.
- Not at all. Any promise of a guaranteed position in an AI answer. There is no ranking to buy, and the output varies by model, prompt phrasing, location, date and browsing state.
The five fixes, in the order they usually apply
- Complete and work your Google Business Profile. Categories, services, hours, photos, Q&A, posts, and genuinely earned reviews you reply to. In local categories this is the highest-return action available and it costs nothing. This is the core of local SEO and Maps work.
- Get into the sources the engine already reads. Identify the two or three directories or listicles that supplied the citations in your diagnostic, and get accurate, complete listings there. In Kochi, one listicle decided all ten recommended interior designers.
- Make your pages extractable. Every H2 a real question, the first 40 to 60 words underneath a complete standalone answer, one idea per passage, and no pronouns that lose their antecedent when the passage is lifted out. This is AEO.
- Anchor your entity to things the engines already recognise. Neighbourhood, district, accreditation body, professional association, year established, founder, certifications — consistently, everywhere. Consistency across sources is what makes a model confident enough to name you.
- Publish something only you could publish. First-party data in your own category is the one asset a competitor cannot copy in an afternoon, and it is what turns you into a source rather than a summary. This is the substance of GEO.
What not to do
Fake or incentivised reviews, sockpuppet forum accounts recommending your own business, paid schemes that mass-publish you into scraped directories, template city pages with the name swapped, and editing Wikipedia about yourself. All of these work slightly, briefly, and then cost you the domain. Google’s June 2026 spam update targets scaled content abuse and doorway pages directly.
None of this is a trick in the first place. The engines recommend businesses that are well-defined and well-regarded, because that is the only signal they have.
What we know, what we observed, and what nobody knows
- Established: structured data aids extraction; crawlers must be able to reach your content; entity consistency across sources matters.
- Observed by us, with dates: the Mumbai, Kochi and Delhi results above, each run on 26 July 2026, each with the prompts and engines published so you can re-run them. Retrieval changes; run them next month and the specifics will differ even if the shape holds.
- Industry hypothesis: the specific weighting of any individual factor in generative selection. Treat confident numbers here with suspicion, including ours.
- Unknowable: the actual selection algorithm of any model. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Common questions
Is my website the reason my business isn’t showing up in AI answers? Often it isn’t. In many categories the engine reads someone else’s page about your category — a directory, a listicle, your Google Business Profile or a Reddit thread — and names whoever appears there. Run the 20-minute diagnostic above to see which sources your category’s answers actually cite before rewriting your site.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity? No. There is no paid placement inside AI answers and no guaranteed position to buy, and the output varies by model, prompt, location and date. Anyone selling a guaranteed AI ranking is overpromising.
Which AI engine usually shows a business first after SEO work? Perplexity, typically within weeks once new or updated content is indexed by Google or Bing, because it retrieves live and weights freshness heavily. Google AI Overviews usually take one to three months where an Overview exists for the query, and ChatGPT tends to be slowest.
Why do B2B companies struggle to appear in AI answers? B2B categories often have no consumer directory for the engine to read, buyers rarely leave reviews, and the key detail — specifications and certifications — is frequently locked in PDFs or images. Putting that detail on indexable pages as plain text is the quickest fix.
